Our Curriculum Focus

All of the courses at Online-Learning are related to the emerging field of Information Design. We provide training in skills such as writing, graphic design, human factors design and technology languages (e.g. XML, XSLFO, XSLT) related to single source publishing.

Our writing and design courses provide students with a systematic approach to planning, writing and designing business documents and correspondence, technical documents, online help systems, and web-based training courses. Our graphic design course provides authors with additional training in the preparation of graphics for any of these information products.

Our human factors design courses provide students with a systematic user-centered design approach to the design of online information and practical experience in user interface analysis, user interface design and usability testing.

Our technology language courses provide students with practical training in using XML technologies such as XML, DTD, XSLT, and XSLFO. XML has become the industry-standard for creating single source documentation and eBusiness applications. XML is becoming a high-demand technology. For example, information writers and designers who understand web technologies command higher salaries in the job market [article].

Each course combines self-paced lessons and assignments with instructor mentoring via discussion groups, chat and e-mail. At the beginning of each course, the instructor provides students with a schedule for group chat sessions and assignment completion dates. Students work through course readings and interactive quizzes at their own pace. If they have questions, they have convenient access to their instructor via one-on-one email and a monitored discussion board. Depending on the length of the course, students must complete between two and five assignments. These assignments provide students with an opportunity to practice the new skills they are learning. When they complete an assignment, they submit it for marking and feedback. The courses are certified by universities in the United States and Canada.
